In Search Of: Grand Marshals for Allentown parade

The City of Allentown and the Points of Pride Parade and Community Festival Committee has launched a search for nominations for Grand Marshals for the Points of Pride Parade Sept. 29 as part of the city's 250th anniversary celebration.

The committee is not just looking for anyone to serve as Grand Marshals. They are looking to honor a man and a woman who were born in Allentown, currently live in the city and love their hometown. Oh, and they must be at least 85 years old. And, available at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, when the parade begins.

Nominations, listing name, address, phone number, birth date and the significant connection between the individual and the city of Allentown, can be mailed to Allentown 250, 435 W Hamilton Street Allentown, PA 18101 or e-mailed to tara.craig@allentownpa.gov. Questions can be directed to Tara Craig at 610-437-7530. Deadline for nominations is 3 p.m. Sept. 12.

The Grand Marshals will be chosen no later than September 21.

The parade will be part of "Celebration Weekend," from Sept. 27 through Sept. 29. Other events that weekend include a Peace and Prosperity Ecumenical Service on Sept. 27 and a Hess's Hollywood on Hamilton Restaurant Night on Sept. 28.

The Rev. Bob Stevens of Zion's Reformed United Church of Christ in Allentown and chairman of the Points of Pride Parade and Festival Committee said the parade will begin with an opening ceremony at William Allen High School featuring the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps from the U.S. Army at 11 a.m.

The parade will head south on 17th to Hamilton Street and then east to the downtown where the festival will take place. More than 20 bands will perform in the parade and at the festival, Stevens said, and more than 70 groups are registered to participate in the parade and more than 90 are signed up for the festival.
