140 missing, 6 rescued as boat sinks off Indonesia

(AP) ? Rescuers were searching for scores of asylum seekers Thursday, a day after their boat sank off the Indonesian coast. Six people were rescued, but more than 140 remained missing.

The emergency was the latest in a series created by a growing human smuggling trade in which thousands of would-be refugees from countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Sri Lanka travel from Indonesia to Australia in overcrowded fishing boats.

More than 90 died when two boats sank within a week in June and more than 300 have lost their lives making the perilous journey across the Sunda Strait between Indonesia and the Australian territory of Christmas Island since last December.

In the latest incident, a boat reportedly carrying 150 asylum seekers sank off the main Indonesian island of Java on Wednesday.

The crew of a merchant ship taking part in the search, Liberian-flagged APL Bahrain, spotted survivors in the water early Thursday 75 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of Java and rescued six, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said.

"There are grave fears for a lot more," Clare told reporters.

The Bahrain's captain, Manuel Nistorescu, told the Fairfax Media website that he also saw what he believed were bodies in the water.

"I think I saw some of them dead," he said.

Nistorescu said the six rescued, all Afghan men, had been in the water for almost 24 hours. There were also women and children aboard the asylum-seeker boat when it sank, he said. The rescued men appeared to be in good condition and were given overalls from the ship to wear, he said.

Nistorescu said he was about to abandon the search when he heard whistles and yelling from the dark water.

Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said another four merchant ships and an Australian military aircraft had joined the search and rescue operation.

Two Indonesian government ships, an Australian navy patrol boat and two planes from Australia were to join the search later Thursday, she said.

Australian authorities received a call by satellite phone from someone aboard the missing boat early Wednesday requesting help. The person said there were 150 people aboard and the vessel had engine trouble. The boat was then 15 kilometers (9 miles) off Java, officials said.

Indonesian authorities launched a search with two boats and a helicopter but found no trace of the boat by late Wednesday.

Meehan said Australia had offered ships and aircraft to help the Indonesians search Wednesday, but that the offer was not taken up.

The survivors were spotted after Australian authorities expanded the search area based on drift patterns.

Clare, who is the minister responsible for Australian rescue authorities, said Indonesia should not be criticized for failing to find survivors on Wednesday.

"It is very hard to find people that are in distress on a little wooden boat in the middle of the Sunda Strait," he said.

Richard Marles, Australia's junior foreign minister, said the emergency highlighted the need for Australia to urgently establish detention camps in the Pacific island states of Papua New Guinea and Nauru to hold asylum seekers who reach Australia by boat.

The government hopes to send the first asylum seekers to a tent camp on Nauru in September in a strategy to deter others from attempting the same boat journey.

"We are confident that when that happens, we will see a reduction in the number of people making the journey," Marles said.

Clare said people smugglers were rushing to get asylum seekers on boats headed for Australia before the off-shore detention camps were opened.

"People smugglers are running a closing down sale," he said.

Rights group sees police beat W.Sahara protester

Human rights observers visiting Moroccan-held Western Sahara witnessed a woman protester being beaten by police and hospitalised, a member of the group said on Wednesday.

"We saw the woman being beaten. And then we went to hospital, where we found her badly injured," Santiago Canton, director of the Robert F. Kennedy Partners for Human Rights, told AFP by phone from a Sahrawi refugee camp in western Algeria.

"The police were very aggressive. We were told by people there that the situation has been like that for some time," he said.

The incident took place earlier this week in Laayoune, the main city under Moroccan control, during a visit to the disputed territory by the delegation, which is led by Kerry Kennedy, president of the RFK Centre for Justice and Human Rights.

In a statement published by the Washington-based group on Tuesday, the day the delegation left for Algeria, Kennedy described how a policeman lunged at her 17-year-old daughter's camera as she took photos of the incident.

Canton emphasised that the purpose of the trip was to assess the human rights situation on the ground.

He said that while the Moroccan authorities cooperated with the observers, "unfortunately they had a group of people following us everywhere we went."

The visit comes amid a row between the United Nations and Rabat, which has demanded the replacement of new UN peace envoy Christopher Ross, whom it accuses of "bias" in efforts to resolve the status of the territory.

Morocco annexed the Western Sahara in 1975 in a move never recognised by the international community.

The rebel Polisario Front, which has been campaigning for the territory's independence since before its annexation, controls a small part the desert interior and has bases in Tindouf, across the Algerian border, where some 40,000 refugees live in extreme conditions.

The rights observers travelled to Tindouf on Wednesday, where they met rights activists and families of the victims of Africa's longest-running conflict.

They were due to meet representatives of UN agencies and NGOs working there before holding talks with Polisario leaders.

"It is moving to see women who have such terrible stories of human rights violations committed against them or their relatives not admit to being defeated or broken," Kennedy was quoted as saying by the official Algerian news agency APS.

Some Moroccan MPs have strongly criticised the group's visit.

Morocco's Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Otmani, cited by the official MAP news agency on Wednesday, said he hoped the visit to Western Sahara and Tindouf would allow the group "to realise the gross abuses suffered by the populations in the camps."

The delegation will publish a report at the end of the trip, which is due to wind up on Thursday.

Romney launches pushback on Bain attacks

Romney (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)TAMPA?After weeks of negative attacks from President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies, Mitt Romney's campaign has signaled that it is ready to launch a major pushback on criticism of Romney's record at Bain Capital.

On Thursday, the campaign unveiled a new website?SterlingBusinessCareer.com?which redirects to a page on Romney's campaign website that talks up what it describes as the candidate's "success in the private sector." It features testimonials from people who worked with Romney while he was at Bain, most of them employees of companies the firm invested in.

The site name is an obvious reference to former President Bill Clinton's defense of Romney in the wake of the Obama campaign's attacks on Bain. In May, Clinton told CNN in an interview that Romney has had a "sterling business career [that] crosses the qualification threshold" for the presidency.

The site was unveiled at the same time that a major portion of the schedule at the Republican National Convention on Thursday has been dedicated to a defense of Romney's time as a venture capitalist at Bain. Bob White, a longtime Romney friend and adviser who worked with him at Bain, will talk about Romney's time there. Another speaker will be Tom Stemberg, the founder of Staples, which was founded with seed money from Bain.

The candidate himself is expected to speak about his time at Bain?though aides would not indicate how much. Romney has struggled to answer attacks on his record at Bain?in part because of his own reluctance to discuss his history there.

But there have been signs that the Romney campaign is changing its strategy. Last week, on the eve of the convention, Romney authored an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal talking about the lessons he learned while he was at Bain.

Assad rejects buffer zone as Security Council to meet

President Bashar al-Assad rejected the idea of buffer zones for refugees ahead of Thursday's UN Security Council meeting tackling deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Syria.

The Security Council meeting called by France is aimed at "appealing to world conscience and for mobilisation" in the face of the Syrian humanitarian drama, a diplomat said in New York.

Turkey has floated the idea of creating buffer zones within Syria to receive those displaced by the conflict so they do not flood across the borders into neighbouring countries.

"Talk of buffer zones firstly is not on the table and secondly it is an unrealistic idea by hostile countries and the enemies of Syria," said Assad, speaking Wednesday in interview with pro-regime Addounia TV channel.

He also said his forces need more time to win the battle in Syria, amid fresh fighting, after a car bomb rocked a funeral in a Damascus suburb on Tuesday, killing 27 people.

"I can summarise in one phrase: we are progressing, the situation on the ground is better but we have not yet won -- this will take more time," he said.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who will preside the UN meeting as France heads the Council in August, said Wednesday the issue of buffer zones would be brought up, even if "it is very complicated."

Syria's neighbours Lordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq were all to send ministers to the meeting.

French President Francois Hollande has said France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of such buffer zones.

But Fabius admitted implementing these would be "very complicated" and require the imposition of partial no-fly zones.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said Turkey is in talks with the United Nations on ways to shelter thousands of refugees on Syrian soil.

"We expect the United Nations to step in for the protection of refugees inside Syria and if possible housing them in camps there," Davutoglu was quoted as saying by Turkey's Anatolia news agency.

He was speaking before leaving for New York to attend the Security Council meeting.

Human Rights Watch urged Syria's neighbours to keep their borders open to refugees, but Jordan said it would send home Syrians who attacked and injured more than 20 police in clashes at the Zaatari refugee camp near the border on Tuesday.

Assad on Wednesday also mocked regime defectors, saying their departure amounted to a "self-cleansing of the government firstly and the country generally."

Syria's government has been rattled by several high-profile defections as the conflict has escalated, including former premier Riad Hijab and prominent General Manaf Tlass, a childhood friend of Assad.

"Despite several mistakes, there is a strong bond" between the regime and the Syrian people, Assad insisted, boasting the support of the majority of the population.

"What is happening is neither a revolution nor a Spring, it is about terrorist acts in every sense of the term," he said.

Syrian rebels, meanwhile, said they destroyed five helicopters in a raid on a military airport between the northern cities of Aleppo and Idlib on Wednesday, while state television said the attack was repelled.

Abu Mossab, a rebel who said he took part in the attack, told AFP via Skype that rebels shelled Taftanaz military airport with two tanks captured from the army and destroyed five helicopters.

"We destroyed five helicopters as well as buildings in the airport," Abu Mossab said, although it remained in army hands after the raid in which the rebels lost two men before withdrawing.

State television said the military repelled the attack with the airport suffering "no material damage."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier reported fierce fighting near the airport and helicopter raids on the nearby town of Taftanaz.

In Damascus, activists reported a third straight day of army attacks on rebel strongholds in the eastern outer belt of the city, collectively referred to as East Ghuta.

State media said "terrorist mercenaries" had killed four civilians in Zamalka, using its term for rebels fighting government forces since the anti-regime uprising broke out in March 2011.

State-run newspaper Tishrin said Tuesday's car bombing of a funeral in Damascus was an indication that the "terrorist" groups have reached "a very advanced stage of despair and bankruptcy."

The bombing hit Jaramana, a mainly Druze and Christian town on the southeastern outskirts of Damascus that the Observatory described as generally supportive of Assad's government.

Russia on Wednesday called for an impartial investigation into the latest "barbaric" violence in and around Damascus.

"We insist on a meticulous and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the latest tragic events" using the resources of the United Nations' newly opened office in Damascus, the Russian foreign ministry said.

It singled out the car bomb and the discovery of several hundred bodies near the Damascus suburb of Daraya on Sunday that the rebels charge was the result of a massacre by regime forces.

In violence nationwide on Wednesday, at least 101 people were killed, including 56 civilians, according to the Observatory, which says more than 25,000 people have been killed in the 17-month-long revolt.

The new UN-Arab League envoy on the Syria conflict, Lakhdar Brahimi, wants to visit Damascus in the next three weeks, his spokesman told reporters at the United Nations.

Meanwhile, UN chief Ban Ki-moon held talks in Tehran with Iran's leaders including on the Syria conflict.

After meeting parliament speaker Ali Larijani, Iran's parliamentary news website quoted Ban as saying: "Iran can play an important role in solving the Syrian crisis peacefully."

In Paris, the French presidency said Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi had agreed that there could be no political solution for Syria unless Assad left power, in a telephone conversation with Hollande.

Challenges Facing Part Time Lecturers In Institutions Of Higher ...

Education is central to development as it empowers people and strengthens nations and hence it is critical to nation?s development. Investment in education benefits the individual, society and the world as a whole. A broad-based and good quality education is among the most powerful instruments known to reduce poverty and inequality. Quality education can only be achieved in a university. Quality is a good academic training based on good knowledge transfer, a good learning environment and a good relationship between teaching and research. This implies that the quality of the lecturer (who transfers knowledge and sets the learning environment) is a critical component of quality university education.

Lecturers find themselves moonlighting in addition to their full time work while others who are part time in one institution add work in other institutions. The reasons for moonlighting include the need for extra income, career development, meeting the needs of understaffed departments and changing environments.

However, part time lecturing on top of regular work comes with various challenges.

First, the lecturers have no forum for airing their concerns and these impacts negatively on the teaching/learning process. They remain docile in an environment that requires open interaction with their full time counterparts. Second, it is difficult to balance between full time and part time work thereby making it hard to plan for the available time. In addition, they are never sure of getting part time teaching and as such they cannot predict how to plan their time.

Third, accurate payments, low payments and being paid on time are a big challenge. They do not benefit from institutional deductions for medical cover, car loans, computer loans, annual leave, pension scheme and insurance cover. Payments are irregular and there are delays that sometimes take two to three months particularly at the end of the semester. Four, lack of choice of friendly courses for part time teaching means that lecturers are not imparting the right knowledge to the students. They are sometimes given courses that remain unallocated to full time lecturers and these may not be in their strong areas of specialization. To avoid doing without a course to teach they accept them because they cannot choose for themselves what they desire to teach. Five, these lecturers are overworked when they move from one institution to another and taking too much workload. Chances of taking many courses are there because there is no system of monitoring the loads they have elsewhere.

In addition, they lack time to prepare for lessons, administer assignments and mark to beat the deadlines for the various institutions. Six, commitment to one?s work is important for good service delivery. Part time lecturers, however, are never committed to the institutions they work in for once they are through with their teaching they leave. They cannot be expected to be loyal to the dictates, vision and mission of these institutions because they are there for a short while only. The worst scenario is when part time lecturers feel unwanted by their full time counterparts; sometimes even looked down upon and discriminated against.

To alleviate the problems of part time lecturers, universities should employ more full time lecturers from amongst the part time lecturers to achieve the university?s mission and attract more students.

Your antacid may be doing more harm than good |

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

No one can be blamed for wanting relief, especially when acid reflux makes it feel like molten lava is shooting up through your esophagus. Antacids can bring quick relief, but their long-term use can also bring lasting problems. It?s better to identify and address the underlying causes of acid reflux than simply to squelch the symptoms.

Acid reflux occurs when the contents of the stomach backwash into the esophagus. These contents can include stomach acid, bile, food, or sour liquid. Although the lining of the stomach is designed to handle such an acidic environment, the more delicate tissue of the esophagus is not. As a result, symptoms include indigestion, a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn), and tasting regurgitated food or liquid in the back of your mouth.

Many factors can cause acid reflux, including overeating, obesity, or the types of foods you eat. Spicy foods, fried foods, coffee, chocolate, and citrus are frequently cited as triggers. When the reflux becomes constant, it?s worth exploring some of the common underlying conditions.

Possible underlying causes of acid reflux

H. pylori overgrowth: An H. pylori infection occurs in the stomach and is the most common chronic bacterial infection, affecting more than 50 percent of the world?s population. An H. pylori infection may promote acid reflux by decreasing stomach acid. Although acid reflux is associated with too much acidity, the truth is in many cases too little stomach acid causes acid reflux, which I?ll explain in the next paragraph.

Too little stomach acid: Sufficient stomach acid is necessary to break down dietary proteins, ensure absorption of vital nutrients and minerals, and protect the digestive tract from harmful bacteria. It?s believed that low stomach acid, or hypochlorhydria, results in improperly digested food lingering too long in the stomach. Eventually it backwashes into the esophagus, and although the contents are not acidic enough for the stomach, they are too acidic for the delicate esophageal tissue. Factors that cause too little stomach acid include an H. pylori infection, a nutrient-poor diet, stress, and antacid medications.

Gluten: If you eat gluten, it could be a culprit in your acid reflux. One study found chronic acid reflux affected 30 percent of patients with celiac disease compared to less than 5 percent of those not diagnosed with the disease. Another study found almost 40 percent of children with celiac disease suffer from esophagitis, inflammation of the esophagus that causes heartburn.

Acid reflux usually just one of many digestive symptoms

Acid reflux is often just one of many digestive symptoms that can result from poor digestion, food intolerances, chronic stress, gut infections, and other factors. In fact, one study showed that participants with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) were nearly twice as likely as non IBS participants to suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic, advanced form of acid reflux. Conversely, another study found a majority of participants with GERD also suffered from IBS.

Although antacids can bring temporarily relief, they may also worsen your acid reflux problem in the long run. Ultimately, antacids reduce stomach acid, hinder digestion, and inhibit nutrient absorption. In addition, antacids are shown to weaken bones and increase the risk of food poisoning.

IHeart Organizing: Reader Space: A Fresh Coat of Paint

If I could combine my two favorite hobbies, they would for sure be painting and organizing.? For me, they often go hand in hand, as I love to give any organizing project a fresh new feeling with paint.? It motivates me to get really excited about the organizing part.

So when Deme popped over her projects, I was in ooh la la heaven.? Her blog is titled, A Fresh Coat of Paint, and she loves to organize.? We should be best friends I think.

Although I try to never have {or state out loud} favorites when it comes to just about anything {features, rooms, kids...}, I can't help but have a huge favorite when it comes to the spaces that Deme popped over.? They are all miraculous, inspirational and beautiful... but she created a vanity for her daughter, and I think it's my favorite because I always wanted to do the same for my daughter.? But I never had a daughter, which I am totally cool with since my boys are absolutely incredible, but if I would have, her vanity would have looked just. like. this.
"I walked into my daughter Mia's room one day to find a bomb of toys, books and pink frills had exploded.? When it started to become a regular occurrence, we realized this was a room full of entirely too much stuff and systems that weren't working.? A total overhaul was in order!

My parents had scored this beautiful {but dark} Jenny Lind style bed and vanity at a friend's garage sale and had it painted a fresh white.?? The vanity was our first victim in this room overhaul.? We started by clearing everything off the top and out of the drawers until we were left with a totally blank slate.? Next we had to reassess how Mia uses this space.? She loves to sit here and put on her costume jewelry and dress up clothes, and she loves to dig into my stash of note cards to write letters or invitations to her friends/family, play on her Leapster or listen to audio books during her afternoon quiet time.? And she loves to stash anything and everything into it's drawers.

We decided that all toys and other randomness would find a home someplace else and the vanity would help us organize her jewelry and quiet time activities.? We also decided to move all the accoutrement needed to do Mia's hair out of the bathroom and into this space.? We needed it all to be easily accessible and easily maintainable for a sweet 4 1/2 yr old.

So we purged, sorted and reloaded!?

With the help of some supplies and storage containers from the Target dollar bins, the drawers on the right (lined with scrapbook paper) now hold all of her note writing supplies {pens, note cards, paper, envelopes}.? They also house some of her favorite activity and sticker books.?

The drawers on the left hold her CD case and Leapster, along with jewelry and hair ties.

We swapped out the hard wooden seat for this upholstered ottoman from Target.? It definitely ups the comfy factor for that little tush, and it brings a welcome pop of color and soft texture to break up all the hard wood.? A few sweet accessories, including new pink acrylic hardware, finished off the space.? The best part is that Mia not only loves this special spot just for her, but she's able to keep it clean and organized all on her own.? Win for both of us!"

Pretty incredible right?? But wait, there is SO much more to see!? Next up, her son's closet!
"Our boys Jack and Sully are just 15 months apart, and at 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 yrs old you could say we're about neck-deep in the "diaper phase".??? Sully recently moved to a big-boy bed, graduated from the pacifier and is potty training.....it's been a big year for the little man!?? But with two boys in different sized diapers and adding in the pull-ups for potty training, I'm pretty sure the diapers were winning the closet battle.? With the boys so close in age, we were also having serious issues managing the in/out flow of clothing and the current inventory.? Addressing their closet was high on the priority list if we didn't want to be swallowed alive by adorable toddler clothing and Huggies.?

Much like Mia's room, the boys' closet had too much stuff and there were multiple systems in their room that weren't working.? Again we started by pulling everything out....including the closet doors!? It drove me crazy that I could only access one side of the closet at a time and never really get to the middle.?

Then came the sorting.? Keepsakes were moved to a special box and outgrown baby gear and clothes were moved to the donate pile.? We kept books and the boys' train table/trains in the room; all other toys went to the family room.?

Then we thought about the storage systems in the room.? A giant set of plastic drawers took up a ton of space and held clothes in the upcoming size/season.? We moved the drawers to the garage for additional storage and moved the boys' clothes in the next size up to flat plastic bins under their respective beds.?

The colorful storage tub system in the closet attracted all sorts of items.? So,we gave him a specific job! ? All the diapers are now accessible and organized by type {regular, night-time, day pull-ups and night pull-ups}.? We use the smaller bins to store shoes in the upcoming size/season.? We also moved the boys hamper out of the room and into the closet.

We invested in a large dresser that holds the boys everyday play clothes, pj's, socks and undies.? In the closet, the boys clothes are divided on either side and further distinguished by these non-slip ghost hangers my MIL found at Home Goods.? Sully's clothes on the blue; Jack's on the green.

We added a few bins from Land of Nod to the top shelf for extra bedding, misc items and to collect clothes that Jack has outgrown {Sully's outgrown clothes go straight to his younger brother's bin under his bed}.? Bookplate labels from Martha Stewart keep everything clearly marked.

We carried the paint color on the walls into the closet and added a bold curtain in place of the old?

doors.? This is now a closet that completely works for us and our current season of life, but also leaves us the option to add a built-in system or other features to better fit the boys' needs as they grow."

It's? not only important to ensure our kiddos are well organized, we also have to be selfish and organize our own belongings.? Deme did a superb job with her bangles!
"This is one of my favorite projects because we didn't spend a lot of money, used things we already owned, and I now have a beautiful, organized little space that I'm excited to use every day!

When we bought our dining set from Craigslist it came with a handsome {and monstrous!} buffet.? Since we already have a built-in for storage in the dining room, the buffet went to the master to serve as my dresser.? The top 3 narrow drawers would be perfect for solving my jumble of a jewelry collection.?

I first lined the side drawers with an osnaburg fabric {similar to linen} and then lined the center drawer with some pretty wrapping paper.? Long beaded and gold necklaces went in the left drawer and short beaded necklaces and belts went in the right.?
?

I rounded up some bowls and a long, shallow plate to hold my bracelets and long hook-back earrings.? An unlikely find in the kitchen section of Marshall's at just $7.99 {a white ceramic egg platter with blue details} was the answer to corralling my stud/short earrings and rings.? Everything is tucked away in the drawer and I love opening it up to a view of pretty little things each morning!"

I couldn't leave ya'll without an incredible Before and After to drop your jaws at.... so last but certainly not least, check out Deme's nook:
"The summer we began the 2nd phase of our kitchen reno and this breakfast nook was high on the to-do list!? We started out with a dark, scary corner and now have a bright multifunctional space!? The kids ate breakfast and lunch here but there were a few problems.?? They had trouble accessing the chairs against the wall.? It could only seat 4, so one member of our family was out of luck if we wanted to eat here together.? We used this space for play-doh, painting and crafts but the art/craft supplies were scattered throughout the house.? With school starting, we also needed a place for homework and learning activities.

We said goodbye to the dungeon by having a contractor friend install recessed lighting.? HUGE difference!? To expand seating, we took advantage of the corner space by using an L-shaped bench.? I found one on Craigslist and even though it looked a little generic, I couldn't resist the built-in storage in the bench seats.? The honey colored benches got a fresh coat of white paint and l lined the drawers with some graphic shelf paper.? One bench holds a box of painting supplies {so that I just have to pull out one thing when we decide to paint}, as well as crayons, pencils and tape.

The other bench has drawing paper, a couple of dry erase handwriting boards {dollar bins at Target!}, a box of dry erase markers, and activity books.? We absolutely love having everything we need to create and learn in one place, concealed and organized!? We also created a kids' art gallery in the dining room, so new art projects can go right on display.

I normally don't jump on trends but ombre {color gradation} has been calling!? I wanted to use stripes to help the small corner feel larger and a subtle ombre affect with grey stripes did the trick!? We printed and framed one of our favorite Dr Seuss quotes? {"The more that you read, the more things you will know.? The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."} using a digital scrapbooking kit, to really mark this area as a place to explore, learn and create!

Using an outdoor fabric is a great option for covering bench cushions....they hold up well to little ruffians and clean up well too.? If that's not an option, you can use a regular fabric treated with Scotch Guard to create a more durable and protective fabric {same for the fabric used on pillows!}.? Perfect for an active area like this!

We kept the same table and chairs, but changed a few things up.? We painted the table white and took a bright coral to the chairs for an added pop of color.? In the 'before' shot you can see these chairs were really tall.? Before we painted them, I had the hubs cut them down to the next rung and they're now a much better height for this space.? Between the benches and chairs we can now fit up to 6 people at this table {the 2 other chairs are stored in the garage}.? And my boys are loving that they can easily climb onto the benches without help from mom and dad.

We still have a lot to do in this kitchen reno but having this little area done, feels great!? The kids love it and I can't help but smile whenever I walk into the kitchen."

Bettman, NHL issue another proposal to players

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL issued a new proposal to the players' association Tuesday as a lockout looms next month.

And at least one side is happy about it.

"We believe," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said, "that we made a significant, meaningful step."

Time will tell, but at least NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr and his players have another proposal ? the league's second this summer ? to digest. The two sides will meet again on Wednesday at the NHL offices.

A less optimistic Fehr labeled the offering "a proposal that we intend to respond to." Meanwhile, Bettman called it a "counterproposal" to the offer the players presented to the league earlier this month. In that proposal, the players had offered to take two-, four- and six-percent reductions in Hockey Related Revenue for the first three years of a new collective bargaining agreement.

"We felt in order to move the process along," Bettman said, "we tried to address the fundamental issues."

Neither the league nor the players would divulge specifics of the proposal, although Montreal forward Mathieu Darche said he was "encouraged."

"We had a lot of people at the office evaluating the proposal," said Darche, who estimated he received "20, 25 texts" from players asking for details of the different proposal. "It didn't take them five minutes to write it and it won't take us five minutes to read it."

The current CBA expires Sept. 15 and the NHL has said it will lock the players out if a new deal isn't reached.

Limiting the personnel at the bargaining table in the hope of making progress, only Fehr and his top assistant, Steve Fehr, met with Bettman and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly on Tuesday morning when the proposal was issued. Traditionally, several players have joined in on the talks.

Tuesday's session was the second time in six days that the meeting was limited to just the four executives. They met for two hours last Wednesday in Toronto, exclusively. That meeting was to discuss the state of the negotiations.

"We don't know the answer to that," Fehr said when asked if the smaller meetings jumpstarted the negotiating process. "If it doesn't (work), we'll find another way."

After the sessions in Toronto, the return to New York was a strange one for both sides. Negotiations resumed in the morning, as planned, but then took a slight break while Fehr left the building. Upon exiting, he told reporters talks had paused just for a bit.

"I think the appropriate thing to do under the circumstances is go back (to our office). We've got constituents and so on," Fehr said at the time. "And so we'll see you later on I'm sure."

He eventually returned to confirm the proposal, and was joined by player representatives this time. Fehr was accompanied by Darche, San Jose defenseman Douglas Murray and Winnipeg defenseman Ron Hainsey.

Tuesday's session was billed as "core economic," and if nothing else, the players now have more to work with.

"I'm trying to get us on to the same page," Bettman said. "I'm trying to get us on to a common language."

But, clearly, he knows what he's up against. In fact, following the session, Bettman said he wouldn't "feel better about this process until it is successfully completed." He defined successful completion as having "a collective bargaining agreement."

Time's running out for that.

Chicken Soup for the Non-Hipster Soul -- Grub Street New York

We have no idea how this took so long: The "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series is expanding its business to include a line of actual soup, and lots of other foodstuffs like potpies and casseroles. Perhaps its earnestness is the appropriate antidote to Campbell's new hipster soups. [NYDN, Related]

The Top 10 Signs Your Website Needs a Makeover | Raxa Design

If you ever watched ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," you know that makeovers are about much more than a few surface changes. Families' homes weren't transformed simply so they could show off their shiny new digs to friends and family. Instead, it was to give these families a new lease on life.

The same concept applies to your website. While a common assumption is that web design is all about how a site looks, that's actually just one component of the web design process. Good web design evaluates every aspect of your site and focuses on how to make each part as effective as possible.

Because web design is such a holistic process, it can have a significant impact on the bottom line of your business. If you have a sneaking suspicion that your website isn't living up to its full potential but aren't 100% sure, here are the top ten concrete signs that your website is in need of a makeover:

You're Not Collecting Leads

If you want your website to have a positive impact on your business, it needs to be able to make people who come to it more than visitors. The most common way to accomplish this crucial goal is by collecting lead information. Once you have someone's name, email address and any other required information, you can build a relationship with them and ultimately close a sale. But if your website isn't collecting any of this information, you're missing out on this opportunity to increase sales.

Your Website Takes a Long Time to Load

When dial-up access was the only way to get online, people accepted the fact that using the Internet was an experience that required patience. But now that high-speed access has become the standard, people expect sites to load instantly. If your website doesn't load right away, potential customers are going to head off to Google and ultimately end up on the site of one of your competitors.

It Doesn't Include a Blog

Blogs have evolved way past the days of individuals sitting in their pajamas and typing out their thoughts. Blogs have become the standard for businesses to communicate with potential and existing customers. A blog allows you to keep current customers in the loop, as well as give prospects more insights into why your business is the right fit for their needs. Not having a blog on your website prevents you from being able to create these communication channels.

No One's Sticking Around to Read Your Content

If you already have a blog on your website, you can look at your analytics data to see how long visitors spend reading it. If this process leads to you discovering that most visitors leave your blog after just a few seconds, it means the posts you're publishing aren't connecting with your target audience. It probably also means that your blog is lacking powerful visual accents like strong titles and interesting pictures that can grab visitors' attention and get them to stick around.

You Don't Know How Long Visitors are Staying on Your Site

If you have a blog but can't look at how long visitors are reading your posts, it means your website doesn't have an analytics program installed. Because this data creates the backbone for being able to improve your site, not having analytics is a problem that you need to remedy ASAP!

Visitors Have to Jump Through Hoops to Contact You

When someone comes to your website and wants to contact you, what steps do they need to go through to get in touch with you? If the answer is scour your site for an email address or fill out a form with eight mandatory fields, chances are your site is turning away a significant number of people who would otherwise be very likely to make a purchase from your business. Since you never know when someone's going to want to contact you, it needs to be dead simple for a visitor to contact you regardless of where they are on your site.

When Prospects Type Searches Into Google, Your Site Doesn't Show Up

Think of a few phrases someone might type into Google when they're looking for the product or service your business offers. Now, actually type those phrases into Google. When you look at the first page of results, do you see a link to your website? If not, it means your website hasn't been properly optimized and promoted. It also means quite a few prospects are checking out your competitors' websites instead of yours.

Your Site Can't Be Accessed from an iPhone

Thanks to the sophistication of mobile browsers like Safari on the iPhone, "mobile versions" of websites are a trend that has peaked. While your site doesn't need a special version for cellphones, it does need to be accessible. Since mobile browsing continues to be the fastest growing area of Internet access, if you type your URL into an iPhone and don't see key parts of it or any of it, chances are it's the result of your site relying on Flash. Since Apple sold 35 million iPhones in just the last 3 months, you don't want to leave this problem unresolved!

You Don't Have a Way to Connect with Prospects on Other Sites

Just like people expect businesses to have an active blog on their website, they also expect businesses to have a presence on Facebook and Twitter. If your website doesn't link to your presence on these social media sites or you don't have one at all, it means that your site is once again holding you back from connecting with prospects who are very interested in what your business has to offer.

You Always Include a Disclaimer When You Give Someone Your URL

If you're so embarrassed by your website that you always make excuses about it when you give someone the URL, it's a definite sign that your site needs a major overhaul!

As you can see, there are a lot of problems that can plague a website and ultimately hold back your business from its full potential. Although it can be discouraging to realize that your website has multiple issues, the good news is there are solutions for every problem on this list.

If you want to say goodbye to your lackluster website and hello to a new version that consistently brings in new business, get in touch with us today to discuss how we can transform it into a site that moves your bottom line!

Dealing With Car Accident Through Structured Settlement

A car accident is tragic. A damaged car would mean a damaged investment. The worse is, you may get your own injuries as well from the accident. However, what would make the whole circumstance even more tragic is the lack of financial assistance when you expect and deserved it.

This is how structured settlement gets in the picture. Usually, a person involved in a car accident would only be able to have financial assistance after the case has been deemed eligible by the rules of court. Now the thing is, it might take a long time for you to get what you want to claim. But if you take advantage of structured settlement, you get a faster process of acquiring assistance on your medical needs as well as financial needs brought about by the accident.

When one is approved to receive the benefits of the settlement, he gets to have these benefits depending on the terms provided. It may be monthly, quarterly or annually. These benefits will be provided by the life insurance company you have or the federal financial institutions itself. Basically, the essentials of the settlement depend on the judgment of what actually happened in the accident. However, even if you get a lot of these advantages, it is never okay to get it because of an accident. As always, extra care is recommended.

You will never know what will happen next. Even if you are in the middle of a corporate christmas party, anything can happen. However, this reality should not stop you from having the most of the experience. Team Bonding can provide you with so many fun-filled activities to help you and your co-workers have fun to the fullest.

For any activity inquiries, you can check them out. For sure, you will not regret a single moment.

Irene's big mystery: Where is Marble Arvidson?

It hadn't yet begun raining when a teenager named Marble Arvidson pinned a note to the door of his bedroom in a foster home, saying he'd be back in half an hour.

By the time he was reported missing the next day, police officers were overwhelmed by the deluge wrought by the remnants of Hurricane Irene, the state's worst natural disaster in generations.

And so, a year after that last Saturday in August, the friendly but guarded 17-year-old with long blond hair, a lanky build, an unpredictable temper and a penchant for black clothing remains missing in what may become Irene's most enduring mystery.

"I want to assume he just chose to leave and he's just somewhere else," said Dan Nichols, 18, a friend from the streets of Brattleboro. "He's most likely gone far, because lots of towns around here know about the situation. There are missing persons posters everywhere."

Did he get high at a favorite hangout, slip on a rock, get washed away in a raging stream? Did he commit suicide? Was he abducted and killed? Or did the near-adult cleverly decide the coming storm was a golden opportunity to slip out of his hardscrabble life and quietly build a new one?

Authorities and those closest to him simply don't know. They're left only with what little they know about a visitor to his door before he disappeared and the details of the life that led him to the red clapboard house at state Route 9 and Sunset Lake Road.

___

Marble's extended family is from western Massachusetts, but he was born in California. His mother, Sigrid Arvidson, thought the name would be whimsical and attention-getting.

"It's got that ring to it; it's a strong name and stuff," she said. "I loved marbles."

She and the boy moved back to Massachusetts when he was 1; she was escaping an abusive relationship and struggling with alcoholism.

Marble's great-grandparents raised him until he was 5 or 6; then he began spending time with his sober mother, eventually living with her again full-time. In 2001, she moved to a house in the country in Halifax, Vt., where she also found better schooling for Marble.

In early adolescence, the boy began working with a male mentor, meant to provide a role model he didn't have.

That lasted until he was 14, when an adolescent power struggle about cleaning his room and other restrictions on the life of the growing teenager erupted into violence. He took a splitting maul to the outside of the house, smashing the porch and parts of the foundation, causing about $3,000 in damage, his mother said.

Video: Florida prepares for Isaac?s arrival

Marble then went into traditional foster care. His third and final placement was the red house in West Brattleboro, a neighborhood in a town of about 7,500 in southeastern Vermont known for its hippie culture and left-wing politics.

Still in the custody of the Vermont Department of Children and Families, Marble lived with a mentor ? a legal guardian in his 20s ? along with another teenager and that teen's mentor.

He would hang out by the regional transportation center, situated near a stream called the Whetstone Brook. When last seen, he was about to enter his last year at Brattleboro Union High School, where he was making Bs and thinking about college.

"He did struggle with his emotions, he did struggle with his frustration and anger, and sometimes he needed outside help beyond what a family member or a mentor could give him, but I do believe those options were available to him and they were utilized," said his aunt Patricia Kittredge, of Belchertown, Mass., one of the top noncommissioned officers in the Massachusetts National Guard.

On Aug. 27, a Saturday, Irene was churning up the coast of the Carolinas on its way to New York City and New England.

Marble pinned a note to his bedroom door around 2 in the afternoon, saying he was "going to frolic with some friendly gremlins," and left the house with a man who appeared to be in his mid-20s, someone he knew, who might have been wearing a black baseball cap, two of his roommates later remembered.

An hour or so after Marble left, his girlfriend came looking for him, but he wasn't there. At first, people thought he was with friends.

Later that afternoon, it started to rain. The next day, Sunday, Vermont was dealing with a deluge that dropped more than 7 inches of rain onto the Green Mountains, upstream from Brattleboro.

"I think like many parents and people, you get a little nervous and you go, 'You know, he's probably over at a friend's house,'" Kittredge said. "Do I think that they probably should have taken it more seriously Saturday night? Yes, but I can understand why they didn't."

Isaac lashes Florida Keys with rain; New Orleans preps

On Sunday, lots of calls were made to lots of his friends.

"'Hey, he still didn't come home. We can't find him,'" Kittredge said. "And this is in the middle of, we have no streets, we can't get anywhere, communication is down and everybody is overwhelmed."

Police say Marble was reported missing by his foster parent on Sunday.

The first thing police did was alert other agencies Marble was missing, Brattleboro Police Chief Eugene Wrinn said. Officers met with the foster parent and others, but police were dealing with Irene, a tropical storm by the time it swept over Vermont.

"I think we put the efforts that we could and the resources that we could," Wrinn said.

Whole towns were isolated for days because of washed-out roads and bridges. Six people died, and damage was pegged at three-quarters of a billion dollars in a state with a total budget of about $5 billion. In Brattleboro, it was months before many downtown businesses reopened.

The house where Marble lived stayed on dry ground, but its direct route to town was cut for three days by the Whetstone Brook and another stream, which turned hay fields into raging torrents and inundated a mobile home park.

Kittredge, his mother, his girlfriend and others held news conferences asking for his return or for information, pleas that were later posted on YouTube. There's a website and a Facebook page. Fliers are posted throughout the region. A $2,500 reward is still untouched.

And police still haven't learned who knocked on the door.

"My sense is that whatever he went to do turned into something else, and he wasn't prepared for it," said his mother, who just moved to Lyons, Colo., with Marble's 15-year-old brother Soren to, as she put it, "give us a chance to heal."

Marble didn't take anything with him when he left. His bank account remains untouched. There are no electronic tendrils that could be used to track him. Extensive ground searches by people and dogs have turned up nothing.

"He admitted he smoked marijuana; is it possible that he went outside slipped and fell, hit his head and knocked himself unconscious and got washed away by the storm? Yeah, it's possible," Kittredge said. "Is it possible that he went outside to go for a walk and somebody stopped to pick him up and he thought it was a good idea and whoever it was, was a crazy person who abducted him? It's just odd that there is no trace."

Did he commit suicide, his remains washed away? Maybe, Kittredge said, but no one saw any warning signs.

There are darker, barely whispered rumors that Marble was feuding with people around town or that perhaps his marijuana use played a role in his disappearance. Wrinn, the police chief, said investigators have heard the talk.

The detective who first led the search for Marble has left the department. Wrinn said he has assigned two detectives to start from scratch. He's still hopeful Marble will be found alive.

Nichols, the friend, said he met Marble in school and they became friends.

"He was a real smart kid, always got good grades," he said. Belying his largely black wardrobe, he'd eagerly talk to almost anyone but never get too personal.

Nichols last saw Marble a couple of days before he disappeared. Like everyone else, he has heard rumors but doesn't know what happened to him.

"I don't think he wanted anyone to think that he was dead or injured," Nichols said. "He had people who cared about him, and he cared about people, too."

Marble's aunt and mother hope focusing attention on the case will prompt someone to come forward with information.

"His 18th birthday would have been June 14," Kittredge said. "There was this little part of me that went, if he had the ability and the audacity to go hide out until he turned 18, I would have hoped he would have turned up by now.

"I believe he is out there somewhere for sure. I don't necessarily have a strong feeling he is out there alive. I think it is possible, but I think it is remote."

Egypt reopens Gaza border crossing for passengers

(AP) ? An Egyptian security official says Egypt has reopened its passenger terminal with the Gaza Strip and resumed normal operations there after nearly three weeks of disruption following a deadly attack on Egyptian soldiers by Islamic militants.

The official said from inside the Rafah crossing that it will be open six days a week, with normal security measures. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

The closure of the terminal raised tensions between Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Gaza's ruling Hamas, which had hoped Morsi would end the enclave's five-year isolation.

Egypt shut down the terminal after 16 Egyptian soldiers were shot dead by masked gunmen while breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on Aug. 5.

New Sony Music and Video Unlimited Releases for August 24, 2012

6h ago - Sony Entertainment Network Marketing Manager Jeff Safran is here with this weekend's new Music and Video Unlimited releases today, as follows:

This week, the Music Unlimited service features new releases including Trey Songz, The Darkness, and Bloc Party, as well as new albums from Dispatch, DJ Khaled, Minus the Bear, Blake Shelton, and Passenger.

Also, we recently launch our Frenchkiss Records Premium Channel, featuring artists such as Local Natives, The Hold Steady, The Antlers and one of today's featured new releases, Bloc Party. You can find it now in the Premium Channels section of the Music Unlimited service.

Featured New Releases

Trey Songz - Chapter V

Trey Songz has kept a consistent beat on the R&B music scene, wetting our appetites between full-lengths with the EP, "Inevitable" and appearing on songs with Lupe Fiasoc, J. Cole, Meek Mill and Waka Flocka Flame, to name a few.

The influence of some of these collaborations must have inspired Trey to brach out even further on this album, with more co-written tracks than ever before, alongside the likes of Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and more.

In a music industry that is "every man for himself," sometimes, Trey Songz embraces the community he is a part of and creating a unique sound that woven together will surprise and invigorate fans.
If You Like: Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo
Recommended Track: "Check Me Out" (ft. Diddy & Meek Mill)"

The Darkness - Hot Cakes

2012 feels like a banner year for bands coming out of hiatus, such as No Doubt, Dispatch and more jumping back into the game and experiencing the new music industry and new ways to engage with fans.

One such band is The Darkness, who took the rock world by storm with their glamorous, over-the-top performances and relentless songs that echoed the excess of the 80s hair metal days.

After a seven-year silence, they return with "Hot Cakes," a strategically focused and aesthetically deliberate effort that reflects The old Darkness we met in 2003 and the new Darkness who is focused on fun, rock and popular breakfast items.
If You Like: KISS, Tenacious D, Alice Cooper
Recommended Track: "She's Just a Girl, Eddie"

Bloc Party - Four

The members of Bloc Party captivated the indie rock world with their 2005 debut, Silent Alarm, with their formula of frantic instrumentation over the smoothness of singer Kele Okereke's booming and melodic voice.

The dichotomy of these two sounds made sense together, but also made sense apart, as Okereke explored a more electronic solo album and bassist Gordon Moakes opted for heavier guitars and swirling melodies in Young Legionnaire.

Four years since their last record, they bring their musical nuances together for their fourth album (see what they did there?), including Moakes' Young Legionnaire producer Alex Newport (who also did the likes of The Mars Volta & At the Drive-In) and an even louder Okereke for a seriously massive album.
If You Like: Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand
Recommended Track: "Octopus"

(PS - Hear new tracks and songs from their indie rock labelmates in our new Frenchkiss Records Premium Channel!)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The lawyer for a paparazzo charged with recklessly pursuing photos of Justin Bieber says he is challenging the constitutionally of a new law.

Attorney David S. Kestenbaum says it violates the First Amendment and is overly broad. He represents Paul Raef, a celebrity photographer who was charged July 25 with four counts, including reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, following another vehicle too closely and reckless driving.

A hearing on Kestenbaum's motion is set for Sept. 24. Kestenbaum says Raef has not been booked because he is the first person charged under the 2010 law and police did not recognize it.

The charges stem from a July 6 high-speed freeway pursuit involving Bieber and photographers.Calif. anti-paparazzi law

How Days of Thunder Changed Hollywood

In his death as in his films, Tony Scott handed you, on the sly, little reasons to take heart. Scott, the Hollywood director, killed himself last week, jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Yet even embedded in such a dire news item there lay the speck of leavening irony. The man who gave the world (twice) Tom Cruise as an appendage to instruments of macho locomotion?the fighter jet (Top Gun) and the stock car (Days of the Thunder)?pulled up to his appointed hour in a Prius.

Several of Scott?s obits stressed that the films he made in the 1990s represented a rebound, maybe even an atonement, for the frankly exploitative work he did in the 1980s, when he was the gun-for-hire on the Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer summer glib-fests. True, but incomplete: The best film he made may well have been Crimson Tide; but the most important film he made was Days of Thunder. To understand why, a bit of backstory is in order.

Standard histories of Hollywood point to a series of events at the end of the 1970s that brought a golden age of director-driven cinema to an end, in particular the failure of the film Heaven?s Gate, in 1980. United Artists had given the director Michael Cimino, fresh from his triumph with The Deer Hunter, a long leash, and with it he singlehandedly lured UA, a company founded by the legendary quartet of Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith, down the road to ruin. Like every morality tale, this is a massively convenient oversimplification. Nonetheless, as the 1980s dawned, studios (and their corporate owners) were in no mood to dispense unlimited amounts of money and autonomy to self-styled geniuses. Enter Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer.

Simpson had been head of production at Paramount before being eased out for a worsening coke habit. Bruckheimer had proven himself a savvy producer, particularly on the still grossly underrated American Gigolo. Together they understood that, in more budget-wary times, the producer, not the director, might assert himself as the true author of a film. (This was not entirely fanciful: The producer was often considered to be the principle maker of the film until the auteur revolution of the ?50s and ?60s.) The full-page ad that announced their deal with Paramount, in 1985, read: ?From the premise to the premiere. From the first draft to the last detail. From the first shot to the millionth cassette. Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer are total filmmakers.?

Simpson and Bruckheimer conceived of their movies in radically non-narrative terms?as jangly necklaces of MTV-like rock video sequences interspersed with feats of, well, fill-in-the-blank: dancing, fighter-piloting, stock car derring-do. To make such a movie one need not hire Serge Eisenstein; and the duo preferred a director who would not interfere with their publicity-crafted images as ?total filmmakers.? Enter Tony Scott.

Scott had done striking visual work on the vampire flick The Hunger. Other than that, his r?sum? consisted of little more than a well-regarded Saab commercial. On his first assignment for the duo, Scott delivered huge: Top Gun was the commanding box office success of 1986, and it made Tom Cruise over, from a likable rising star into a global brand that has survived, mostly undented, for a generation.
